Paterson Vetoes Bill to Move Radioactive-Waste Station away from PS 84
The anti-Radiac bill, which was written by Joe Lentol and championed by El Puente’s Luis Garden Acosta, haas been vetoed by Governor Paterson. The bill would have prohibited the storage of radioactive waste within 1,500 feet of a school (P. S. 84 is just inside that radius). Paterson, in vetoing the bill, noted that Radiac provided essential services to city hospitals.
Both sides are right, though Radiac is a potentially scary scenario. Estimations in the past were that an “incident” at Radiac (which would probably be more chemical than radiological) would impact most of the southern portion of Williamsburg, and could result in toxic plumes reaching lower Manhattan. What remains to be seen is how long Radiac will carry on in what is an increasingly residential neighborhood. With the rezoning of Domino, Radiac now sits on a very small island of M zoning, and will soon sit directly across the street from some pretty pricey offices and condos.
