Sun Rises on HBO's Boardwalk Empire
Industry is not dead in Brooklyn, but it has certainly changed:
In a parking lot in a desolate corner of Greenpoint, Brooklyn, where developers once planned to erect a high-rise condo, sits a 300-foot-long facsimile of a section of the Atlantic City Boardwalk, circa 1920… The show, which films its interiors at Steiner Studios, has about 1,200 employees, including cast and crew, and has used roughly 2,000 extras. It took 200 days to shoot the 12 episodes for the first season, with help from nearly 500 companies supplying everything from props to pastries…
And it’s not just traditional film-related businesses that are benefitting:
Martin Greenfield Clothiers, which makes custom hand-tailored suits out of its shop in Bushwick, Brooklyn, got so many orders from the series that its owners had to work overtime to get the job done. The business from the show not only added at least 5% to the Greenfields’ sales, it spurred interest from other TV and movie producers.
